September – International Recovery Month

Listen to this article

Each year, International Recovery Month is held to increase awareness, challenge stigma, and raise the visibility of recovery projects. Recovery can and does happen.

HMPPS works alongside a number of partners to help people in prison with drug and alcohol addictions promote their recovery and continue this support upon release.

There are now 60 Incentiv-ised Substance Free Living units in prisons to support those who wish to live free of substances. We also have a number of specialist abstinence-based communities – Drug Recovery Wings – to help us learn from different recovery experiences, creating more opportunities for people to lead better lives.

HMPPS is also increasing the number of computers in prisons to allow video calls with community treatment and recovery services. This helps improve recovery support in prison and continuity of care after release.

Many prisons will be hosting events throughout September to bring together the recovery community and raise awareness and support for those in recovery. We want to highlight the achievements of people in prison and on supervision with the Probation Service, celebrate the resilience of those who have overcome addiction, as well as promoting the importance of support and treatment for those in recovery.

If you are interested in getting involved with International Recovery Month activities in your prison, contact your local Substance Misuse Team and/or Drug Strategy Lead.

Your testimonials

I understand that the story isn’t the same for everyone and that I also have myself and others to thank for helping me on my way to recovery. But I will be forever grateful for the help I have received from the work of Drug Strategy even before I was aware that it existed. It was definitely a building block in my own road to recovery.

Our Drug Strategy Lead has been instrumental in my recovery. Firstly, her work in Drug Strategy has provided me with a wing where I feel safe and surrounded by like minded people. I have attended AA and CA meetings weekly and amazingly stayed sober for almost 6 months. (HMP The Mount)
