By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Officials in Ecuador say that 31 inmates have been killed since Saturday when a battle erupted between rival gangs inside of a prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

According to the BBC, violence escalated and the inmates took the prison guards hostage in jails across Ecuador.

Over 100 guards have been freed but several others remain held.

Authorities in Ecuador have attempted to quell the violence by housing members of rival gangs in different wings of the prison but overcrowding has made it difficult to keep them apart.

However, moving members of gangs to other jails have only caused other prisons to experience extreme levels of violence with the infiltration of gangs.

In addition, gang members are known to still communicate using phones they smuggle into the prisons.
