The head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, emphasized on Thursday the development of the criminal and civil justice system in line with international standards, pointing out that the independence of the Iraqi judiciary today is a fundamental pillar in achieving justice and equality among all citizens without discrimination.

The head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, said in a speech during the celebration of Iraqi Judicial Day, attended by a reporter of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The independence of the judiciary is the basis for building any democratic system, and the independence of the judiciary is a fundamental pillar in achieving justice and equality among all citizens without discrimination,” he said, noting that “we worked to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and provide the appropriate environment for judges to work freely and impartially away from any influences, as the course of the judiciary witnessed important transformations starting from building courts, passing through the development of legislation, and reaching the strengthening of the independence of the judiciary.”

“We made efforts to modernize procedures, develop court buildings and train judges to provide high-quality judicial service, and the criminal and civil justice system was developed in line with international standards,” he added, noting that ”the judiciary proved its ability to face the great challenges and great difficulties that threatened the fabric of the Iraqi state, and was the foundation stone that helped achieve balance and rebuild trust between the people and the state.”

“Our responsibilities as judges are great because we bear the greatest trust in preserving justice and protecting the rights and freedoms of individuals,” he said, extending thanks and appreciation to ”all judges and judicial staff for their dedication to work, their integrity and their insistence on achieving the truth.”
