Pune: Yerawada Jail inmates have won a chess tournament organized at the national level on September 26 & 27.
As per information shared by Sunil Dhamal, Yerawada Jail Superintendent, 19 teams from different prisons across the country took part in the event in the inter-prison chess competition. The first day of the competition consisted of six rounds. The team from the Yerawada jail won all six matches and got the first prize. The Yerawada Prison Team won all matches against the Varanasi Prison Team, the Ahmedabad Prison Team, the Bangalore Prison Team, the Prayagraj Prison Team, the Dimapur Nagaland Prison Team, and the Baroda Prison Team.
On September 27, the final rounds of the competition were held wherein the team of Yerawada jail continued its winning streak by beating the teams of Bhubaneswar jail and Bangalore jail. Three teams from India, namely Yerawada Central Jail, Bhubaneswar Jail, and Bangalore Jail, have been selected as India’s representatives in the International Chess Competition for prisoners which will be held in October this year.
The win in this chess tournament is a testament to the positive impact that rehabilitation programs can have on the lives of prisoners in the prison system, allowing them to excel in positive activities and make a positive impact on society.
