Wife Of El Chapo, Emma Aispuro, Released After Serving Nearly Two Years In US Prison For Drug Charges

The wife of El Chapo, Emma Coronel Aispuro, is a free woman again after serving about two years in a US prison. CNN confirmed her release occurred on Wednesday (Sept. 13.)

Officials incarcerated her on drug trafficking and money laundering charges in February 2021 after arriving at Virginia’s Dulles International Airport. She pleaded guilty, and a judge sentenced her in November that year. The charges were in relation to her husband, real name Joaquin Guzman, and her involvement in his drug empire.

According to the Daily Mail, the 34-year-old admitted helping him move “at least 450 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kilograms of heroin, and nearly 90,000 kilograms of marijuana into the US.”

Ultimately, a judge sentenced Emma Aispuro to three years in prison, four years on supervised release, and a money forfeiture of $1.5 million. She served about two years of that sentence.

At this time, there are no additional details on Aispuro’s release. Spokesperson Randilee Giamusso for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) told CNN further information is forbidden to protect the “privacy, safety, and security” of those not in their custody.

However, The Los Angeles Times says a FBOP spokesperson told them she’s on supervised release for the next two years.

Meanwhile, her husband, El Chapo, is serving a life sentence in a US supermax prison in Colorado. The convicted drug and firearm trafficker had previously escaped from prison in Mexico twice — reportedly with Aispuro’s help.

In June, officials moved Emma Aispuro from a Texas federal prison to a residential reentry management facility in Long Beach. Her release happened in California.

Emma’s lawyer says she is “very happy to move on with this new chapter of her life,” per the LA Times. She’s also “ready to be with” her twin daughters, whom she shares with El Chapo. Per reports, at sentencing, she begged for forgiveness, vowing to teach her daughters differently.

“I beg you not to allow them to grow up without the presence of a mother,” Emma reportedly said.
