{KXLG – Watertown, SD} A jury in Fargo, North Dakota, found Spencer Moen guilty of Class AA Felony Murder following a brief deliberation period. Moen was accused of beating his wife, Sonja Moen, to death in their West Fargo home in August of 2023 (Valley News Live, October 22, 2024). Both are Watertown, SD natives.
The trial lasted for five days, and testimony was heard from several witnesses, including the couple’s children and Sonja’s mother (Valley News Live, October 22, 2024). A key piece of evidence emerged during the trial when Moen’s 12-year-old daughter testified that she called her mother late at night on August 9, 2023, but her father answered the phone. The young girl said she heard heavy breathing in the background (Valley News Live, October 22, 2024).
In closing arguments, the prosecution emphasized the lack of injuries on Moen as evidence that he did not act in self-defense (Valley News Live, October 22, 2024). The defense argued that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence for a murder conviction (Valley News Live, October 22, 2024).
The jury reached their verdict after just a few hours of deliberation. Moen faces a potential sentence of life in prison without parole. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
