Vocational training, educational opportunities at prisons suggested

PESHAWAR: A senior government officer on Wednesday stressed the need for a more comprehensive approach to vocational training and educational opportunities to help inmates reintegrate into society after release from prison.

An official handout said Director-General (DG) of Law and Human Rights Ghulam Ali called for reforms and rehabilitation at prisons as he and his team met with prison staff and inmates at the Central Prison Peshawar to assess the conditions and the treatment meted out to the prisoners.

The visit was part of a broader initiative of the KP government aimed at evaluating the human rights situation inside the detention centres across the province.The visit revealed that the accommodation issue of the prisoners had been resolved as sufficient space was available for the detainees.

It was added that living conditions and diet menu qualify, adequate healthcare cover and hygienic facilities were available in the prison. The DG emphasized the importance of ensuring timely medical care.

The availability and effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes were reviewed. It was noted that while some programmes were in place, there was a need for a more comprehensive approach to vocational training and educational opportunities to aid in the reintegration of inmates into society.

The DG called for collaborative efforts between government agencies, civil society, and international partners to implement these necessary reforms.
