Unlocking Potential Video Series

(FBOP) – As Veterans Day approaches, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) proudly recognizes our Nation’s veterans who have served our military, risking their own lives, to ensure our freedoms. The achievements and sacrifices of these brave men and women – past and present, during peace and war – deserve respect, support, and gratitude.

It’s noteworthy that more than 35% of the FBOP workforce consists of veterans who have honorably served in the United States Armed Forces. The FBOP is honored to have so many employees who are not only dedicated to public service every day, but who have also bravely served our country. The agency is committed to supporting our military service members and veterans and offers resources including the Bureau’s Battle Buddy Program and the Employee Assistance Program.

The agency is also committed to increasing the recruitment of veterans. Our hiring strategy focuses on enhancing the FBOP’s image, hosting online recruitment events, launching targeted ad campaigns, and utilizing data analytics to gauge effectiveness. One such targeted effort was in collaboration with the renowned show, Military Makeover, hosted by talk show legend and military advocate, Montel Williams.

One of Military Makeover’s primary goals is to assist veterans in their transition out of the military and into successful civilian careers. During their 35th season this year, Montel Williams shares the inspiring narrative of the FBOP’s mission. Two exceptional individuals from the FBOP, Melissa Rios-Marques, the Western Regional Director, and Rasheen Holland, an Emergency Management Specialist, took center stage for their pivotal contributions to upholding the Bureau’s mission of ensuring public safety and facilitating successful reentry into our communities.

Director Colette S. Peters attributes the attraction of veterans to the FBOP to a shared commitment to integrity and an enduring dedication to serving our nation. She notes, “Integrity is one of our core values, which is profoundly appealing to those who have already served our country in one of our military branches.” Director Peters paints a vivid picture of the myriad of career opportunities available within the agency, likening each federal prison to a self-sustaining city. From Correctional Officers to teachers, nurses, doctors, psychologists, and more, every role required to run a city is essential to running a prison.
