Unattended Jail Inmates Roam Parking Garage At Michigan Court

An investigation was launched earlier this week to determine how inmates from a Michigan jail were left in a police transport vehicle for hours unattended.

Where Were The Inmates When Left Unattended?

It was around 5:00 P.M. Monday afternoon when employees at the Kalamazoo County Jail noticed that residents of the jail were roaming in a secure area of the parking garage. Apparently they had been there for more than two hours.

The jail inmates were able to exit the transport vehicle and were found wandering around the parking garage once deputies realized what had happened.

What Happened To The Unattended Michigan Inmates?

Upon the discovery of the situation, law enforcement check out the inmates and they were returned to their housing units according to local media.

Due to standard police protocol, any and all members of the staff involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave.

How Were The Jail Inmates Left Unattended?

So how did the jail inmates end up being left unattended in the complex at 1500 Lamont Avenue in Kalamazoo?

In a statement from Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller III, ‘KCSO immediately initiated an internal investigation to determine how and/or why this incident happened, what happened, if laws, policies, or protocols were not followed, and how this will be prevented in the future.’

Details Of The Ongoing Investigation Are Limited

Sheriff Fuller continued, ‘KCSO is very early into this investigation and will work diligently to find the facts surrounding this incident.’

The Sheriff Department’s corporate council was advised not to share any additional information as the investigation continues.
