A share of $6.4 million in grants from the U.S. Justice Department is coming to recipients in 15 Georgia cities, including Athens. The awards will go to local civic groups, governments, and law enforcement agencies in the state to support public safety and community justice activities.
Athens-based Area Communities to Improve Opportunities Now Inc. will receive nearly $785,000 to support a 36-county program providing employment coaching and mentoring for young people before and after they’re released from the criminal justice system.
Grants to other communities will go toward domestic violence units, a mental health co-responder program, protective gear for law enforcement and jail personnel, and a new app giving residents early warnings of emergencies.
