Two arrested in plot to help inmates escape New Orleans jail

Louisiana State Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the recent escape of 10 inmates from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans.

Cortnie Harris, 32, of New Orleans, and Corvanntay Baptiste, 38, of Slidell, were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation into the high-profile jailbreak.

Investigators say Harris contacted two of the escapees by phone and transported them to multiple locations around New Orleans. Both of those escapees are still on the run. This comes after a maintenance worker, Sterling Williams, 33, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly helping the 10 prisoners escape by cutting off the water to let them remove a toilet.

Baptiste is accused of using a phone and social media to help fugitive Corey Boyd obtain food. Boyd was recaptured in New Orleans East on Tuesday night.

Harris and Baptiste were each charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact and booked into the Plaquemines Parish Jail.

Under Louisiana law, those convicted of being an accessory after the fact face up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $500, or both.

State police issued a warning: those who aid fugitives will be held accountable.

According to authorities, the convicts, some of whom were imprisoned for murder and rape, made a daring nocturnal escape from the Orleans Parish Jail early morning on May 16 while the lone guard assigned to their cell pod was out getting food.

The inmates were able to escape through a hole behind the toilet in one of their cells. They climbed down through the hole, bolted out the back door of a loading dock and sprinted across a nearby interstate, according to released footage of the escape.

They also left a taunting message to prison officials who found their escape route the following morning during a head count.

As of Wednesday, five prisoners have been caught, and five are still on the loose.
