US President Donald Trump on Wednesday asked Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to assume responsibility for ISIS (Daesh) detention centers in northeastern Syria that are under the control of the terrorist group PKK/YPG, the White House said.
The call came during Trump’s meeting with al-Sharaa at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as part of a Gulf-US summit in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
On X, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that Erdogan joined the meeting remotely by phone, praising Trump for lifting US sanctions on Syria and pledging to work alongside Saudi Arabia to promote peace and stability in Syria.
“President Trump thanked President Erdogan and the Crown Prince for their friendship, and told President Al-Sharaa that he has a tremendous opportunity to do something historic in his country,” she wrote.
Leavitt also said Trump encouraged al-Sharaa to “do great things for the Syrian people.”
According to Leavitt, Trump’s requests to Shara include signing onto the Abraham Accords with Israel, telling all foreign terrorists to leave Syria, deporting “Palestinian terrorists,” helping the US prevent the resurgence of ISIS, and taking responsibility for ISIS detention centers in northeastern Syria.
She added that al-Sharaa thanked Trump, Erdogan, and bin Salman “for their efforts to put together the meeting, and recognized the significant opportunity presented by the Iranians leaving Syria, as well as shared U.S.-Syrian interests in countering terrorism and eliminating chemical weapons.”
The Syrian leader also reiterated his commitment to a Disengagement Agreement signed with Israel in 1974, she said, and expressed his hopes that “Syria would serve as a critical link in facilitating trade between east and west, and invited American companies to invest in Syrian oil and gas.”
