Threat no laughing matter — Fort Calhoun man gets six months in prison for school shooting post

LINCOLN — A Fort Calhoun man was sentenced Wednesday to six months in federal prison for making a false threat of a school shooting at an elementary school in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Nathan Joseph Bonacci, 21, told federal authorities that he posted the threat because, “he thought his friends would find it to be funny,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorneys Office.

On Feb. 10, the U.S. Attorneys Office said, Bonacci posted on an app that he had a machine gun and that he planned to drive later to Roosevelt Elementary School in Council Bluffs armed with “$5K worth of ammo” and “I will kill as many people as I can find.”

The threat was forwarded to a school principal, who called law enforcement, prompting an FBI investigation.

The probe eventually identified Bonacci as the source of the threat. When interviewed by the FBI, he said he posted it to a group of his friends.

He was sentenced to prison Wednesday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Bazis for impeding or interfering with a federal officer.
