‘The Talent Inside’ to showcase artwork of HMP Humber inmates

The inmates of HMP Humber, who are studying art within the GRAFT Studio at the prison, have produced artworks inspired by Scarborough Museums and Galleries’  collections.

This was part of a partnership between Scarborough Museums and Galleries and HMP Humber.

The partnership enabled the prisoners to engage with Scarborough Museums and Galleries’ collection, exploring a range of objects from works on paper to social history artefacts and taxidermy.

The project enabled the inmates to explore their creative talents, resulting in an exhibition that celebrates the idea that everyone can be an artist.

The exhibition, entitled ‘The Talent Inside’, showcases the inmates’ creativity in the use of everyday materials accessible to them.

‘The Talent Inside’ is interpreted through the inmates’ own words.

Art tutors from HMP Humber’s GRAFT Studio said: “Our learners have been really excited to participate in this project and it has enabled them to enrich their classroom learning beyond course criteria and into the gallery.

“For many of our learners, GRAFT Studio is their first experience of art education.

“Opportunities to exhibit such as this encourage a sense of belonging to the wider community and give the learners a platform to challenge preconceptions and negative stereotypes of people living in prisons.”

‘The Talent Inside’ will be on display at Scarborough Art Gallery from January 18 to May 3, 2025.

Exhibits will include paintings, drawings, sculpture, and mixed media pieces.

Scarborough Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

Admission is free to under 18s, but adults require an Annual Pass to enter.

An Annual Pass allows entry to both Scarborough Art Gallery and the Rotunda Museum for a year.
