Texas man gets prison in assault, attempted robbery at post office

A 26-year-old man from Bryan, Texas, will serve seven years in prison after being convicted of assaulting and attempting to rob a postal worker, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas Alamdar S. Hamdani announced.

The jury deliberated for two hours March 22 before convicting Adon Bryce Clary of attempted robbery of a post office with a dangerous weapon, assault of a public official with a dangerous weapon and assault of public officials with intent to commit a felony, a news release said Tuesday. The trial lasted four days.

U.S. District Judge George Hanks sentenced Clary to 84 months in federal prison, which will be immediately followed by three years of supervised release.

At the hearing, the judge considered statements from postal employees and customers, including one victim who detailed the frightening experience and its lasting impact.

In handing down the sentence, the judge said Clary can’t be trusted to not put others in harm’s way.

According to the news release, on April 29, 2019, Clary entered the post office at 2121 Wm. Bryan Parkway in Bryan and banged a Game of Thrones beer bottle while pointing an apparent firearm at the clerks.

Clary said he had a gun and demanded all the mail. However, the “firearm” turned out to be an empty pack of green Paul Mall menthol cigarettes.

Five postal workers, three post office customers, three Bryan police officers and two postal inspectors testified during the trial. The postal workers and civilians said in emotional testimony that they feared for their lives.

The jury saw the officers’ body camera video and a cellphone video of the incident that one of the postal workers took.

Clary will stay in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph Anthony Porto and Adam Laurence Goldman prosecuted.
