Texans quarterback CJ Stroud pleads for prison reform, calls US criminal justice system ‘corrupt’

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud called the U.S. criminal justice system “corrupt” while speaking at a post-game press conference after the team’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday.

The remarks came as Stroud spoke out about his father’s struggle with a lengthy prison sentence. His father is in the midst of serving a sentence of 38 years to life in a California prison after pleading guilty to carjacking, kidnapping and robbery charges in 2015, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

Stroud admitted he could no longer keep his feelings on the matter private following a recent phone call with his father.

“I didn’t want to make this public, man, but our criminal justice system ain’t right,” he said. “It’s probably something I need to be a little more vocal about because what he’s going through is not right.”

The quarterback continued, arguing his father is not the only victim of the system.

“It’s not just my dad’s situation, the whole criminal justice system is corrupt,” Stroud said.

Stroud claimed he has seen videos from Mississippi prisons showing rat and roach infestations. Such conditions, he said Sunday, are inhumane.

“Don’t get me wrong. Criminals, they should do the time, but they’re still humans,” he said.

During the Texans’ win Sunday, Stroud set the NFL rookie record for most passing yards in a single game.
