Steve Bannon, longtime Trump ally, released from prison after four-month sentence

WASHINGTON – Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist under the Trump administration, was released from prison on Tuesday – a week out from Election Day – after serving a 4-month sentence.

Randilee Giamusso, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons, confirmed his release to NBC News. USA TODAY reached out to the Bureau of Prisons for additional comment.

Bannon was convicted in 2022 for contempt of Congress after defying a subpoena from the House committee that investigated the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021. He was also fined $6,500. Despite attempts by his legal team to appeal the conviction, a judge ordered Bannon to report to prison by the beginning of July.

After he was released, he told Axios that he felt “amazing and more importantly empowered.”

He was one of two former Trump aides, along with Peter Navarro, who were convicted of defying the committee. Navarro served his 4-month sentence in a federal prison in Miami and was released in July.

Bannon is the host of the “War Room” podcast – a favorite among Trump supporters – that has garnered millions of listeners. Since Bannon’s imprisonment, his podcast has featured guest hosts including Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas.

Bannon has also made false claims about the 2020 election on the podcast, including that it was impacted by voter fraud. He previously vowed that Trump’s political opponents will be investigated and prosecuted if the former president is reelected.

Though Bannon is free now, he faces another legal challenge in New York on allegations that he tricked donors who gave money to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the Associated Press.
