{KXLG – Manderson, SD} A Manderson, SD, man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for the fatal shooting of his 17-year-old girlfriend, while a Rapid City woman who helped cover up the crime received a time-served sentence.
Tyson White Plume, 29, pleaded guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter in federal court on May 3, 2024. He admitted to accidentally shooting the victim while handling a firearm at Sarah Stone’s residence near Rockyford, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
Stone, 44, pleaded guilty to Misprision of a Felony for concealing information about the shooting from law enforcement.
On August 2, 2024, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced White Plume to 15 years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Stone received a time-served sentence and one year of supervised release. Both were ordered to pay the Federal Crime Victims Fund a $100 special assessment.
The shooting occurred on February 5, 2022. White Plume initially faced a Second Degree Murder charge, while Stone was indicted for Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder.
The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Knox prosecuted the case.
Due to the Major Crimes Act, which mandates federal jurisdiction for certain violent crimes in Indian Country, the case was prosecuted in federal court.
