R. Kelly is suing the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, alleging that agency staff members leaked information about him to Tasha K, a social media personality rapper Cardi B sued for defamation.
The lawsuit, filed with the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois, alleges that approximately 60 BOP officers accessed the disgraced singer’s sensitive and confidential information without authorization. The BOP and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.
“The defendant United States of America breached its duty of care to the plaintiff when it allowed countless BOP officers to access plaintiff’s confidential information without any legal basis to do so,” wrote Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s lawyer.
The lawsuit also names Tasha K (Latasha Kebe) as a defendant as it claims that the YouTube personality “rallied her massive following to harass the plaintiff with the use of the stolen information and created chaos in plaintiff’s personal life.”
The purportedly leaked information included private phone calls the singer had with his girlfriend and lawyers. The suit alleges that those calls were monitored and disseminated, which impacted the singer’s ability to defend himself during his Chicago trial.
Kelly was found guilty on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking in 2021, related to allegations of orchestrating a prolonged scheme to exploit women. Subsequently, in September 2022, he faced another conviction in Chicago on distinct federal charges involving child pornography and enticement of minors for sexual purposes and received a 30-year prison sentence. Presently, he is appealing both convictions.
