P Diddy is a ‘very attractive target’ in prison, former prison warden says

P Diddy has been detained in the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since being denied bail twice.

The disgraced music mogul was arrested on September 16 after being indicted on charges of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. After a hearing in a Manhattan court on September 17, Diddy pled not guilty to the charges and his lawyers Marc Agnifilo and Teny R. Geragos filed a motion for bail that was rejected twice by two judges. They wrote that the Brooklyn jail is “not fit for pre-trial detention” and has “horrific” conditions. They also included that an inmate was killed earlier this summer.

Diddy is being held in the Special Housing Unit of the facility and is reportedly on suicide watch. Cameron Lindsay, a retired warden of MDC and an expert witness in corrections, has explained what the 54-year-old’s life is going to look like at MDC and also the risks he faces.

“His huge celebrity status and the allegations of violence against women make him a very attractive target for assault,” Lindsay said. “And in the subculture – in the world of jails and prisons – to deliver a hit on somebody like him would be considered a badge of honor.”

The former warden also named the place “austere” and cold, adding to PEOPLE: “Everything is planned. It’s not a life.” Cameron explained that the Diddy will not have internet access and all outside recreational time will be had in an enclosed area.

R&B singer R. Kelly’s lawyer, Nicole Blank Becker, also alleged to PEOPLE that his time at the MDC was “mentally crippling” and “one of the worst experiences that I have ever heard of.”. The disgraced artist was detained at MDC-Brooklyn following his 2021 federal conviction for sex crimes involving child sexual abuse. He’s currently serving a combined sentence of 31 years at FCI Butner Medium I in North Carolina.

“If Diddy is going to be experiencing anything like I know R. Kelly experienced, it’s not going to be good,” the lawyer said. She added that in her opinion the facility is “not at all” safe.

A federal consultant Sam Mangel also told The Mirror US, that MDC is one of the worst jails in the United States of America and spoke about its terrible conditions. He talked about the jail being “tremendously” understaffed, there being maintenance issues with the HVAC system, the water and the toilets. Mangel additionally said four inmates died by suicide in the past three years and the jail is “unbelievably loud” with “people banging on the cell blocks all night.”
