NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A new Max docuseries premiering on Thursday not only delves into the Nashville criminal justice system but also highlights an issue with the Davidson County court system that WSMV4 Investigates exposed.
Last year, WSMV4 Investigates highlighted the call by judges to increase pay for court-appointed attorneys. They said the low pay keeps many attorneys from taking court-appointed cases and can cause those who do take the cases to get overwhelmed.
Max’s docuseries, Justice, USA, will focus on that and other issues in Davidson County’s/Nashville’s justice system.
WSMV4 Investigates has found that, as of the publishing of this article, Gov. Bill Lee’s budget does not include an increase in funding for the program. Judge Sheila Calloway is featured in the documentary and hopes it changes minds.
“It’s dire, it really is dire and you know, one of the things I hope that the legislature hears or sees this or watches it and sees maybe we do need to do something to improve the caliber of the attorney pay to make sure that attorneys have the time and the money that they can in the resources to really effectively represent people,” Calloway said.
The docuseries is available for streaming on Thursday, March 14.
“Justice, USA offers a view of Nashville’s criminal justice system, offering unprecedented access to the men’s, women’s, and juvenile jails, as workers and inmates confront issues of incarceration, mental illness, and addiction,” Max describes its new docuseries.
