Nagpur Prison Celebrates Birthday of 1-Year-Old Son of Woman Inmate | Nagpur News

Nagpur: It was like any other birthday party of a one-year-old boy, with gifts for the star of the day and return gifts for the other children. What set this birthday party last week apart was that it was hosted in the women’s section of Nagpur Central Jail.
The boy was delivered by a convict serving life imprisonmentfor murder, and has been staying with his mother in the jail.His first birthday was turned into a grand celebration, with the boy’s mother and 110 other inmates, including seven convicts serving life imprisonment, prison officials and others having a party.

The boy, who turned one-year-old last week, had also been baptized by nuns from a reputed school and chapel in a special ceremony in the barracks some time after birth last year.
The Central Jail authorities organize naming ceremony for babies of inmates as per local tradition. So, they had offered to organize rituals for this new-born boy too. The woman, belonging to the Christian community, had expressed a wish to get the ceremony conducted as per the traditional norms of her religion. The prison authorities then organized the ceremony.
The woman convict had stayed with her husband during the Covid leaves. Sources from Central Jail said the woman convict was pregnant when she returned to jail, and her delivery was conducted at Government Medical College and Hospital.
When the time for the boy’s first birthday arrived, Nagpur Central Jail authorities decided to honour the wishes of the doting mother, who wanted to see her son’s first birthday party organized like any where else in the outside world.
Superintendent Vaibhav Agey and DySP Deepa Agey spearheaded the preparations for the special birthday celebration.
“All the children in the barrack were gifted toys along with the birthday boy. There were eatables, cake cutting ceremony, songs and games just like any other birthday party,” said an official who was part of the celebrations.
“We ensured that the woman convict was made to feel at home while the rest of us were her relatives and guests at home. Her son got birthday gifts, which lit up her face,” said a woman official.
DySP Deepa Agey said prison authorities celebrate several personal occasions and events as part of reformation and rehabilitation efforts, especially after Additional DG Amitava Gupta took charge of Maharashtra prisons department.

A determined 18-year-old resident of Raipur, Hitesh Sanwariya, battled severe Haemophilia and expressed his wish for organ donation. Hitesh learned about Cadaver transplant from a newspaper article and discussed it with his sister. He insisted on donating his organs after his demise, stating ‘Ang Daan Mahadaan.’ Despite being on leave, doctors from the Organ and Tissue Transplant department promptly returned to initiate the procedure. Two kidneys, two corneas, and one piece of skin were successfully removed and provided to individuals in need.
