Must See Exhibit, The Man In Black at Folsom

The Kilgore College East Texas Oil Museum is featuring an exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of the historic Johnny Cash concerts at Folsom State Prison in California.

The exhibit, “1968: A Folsom Redemption,” is a collection of photographs and memoirs from two journalists who eyewitnessed Johnny Cash concerts at Folsom. Cash performed and recorded two separate shows inside the prison’s dining hall.

31 of Dan Push’s personal photos make up the exhibition, including a backstage meeting between Cash and Country music legend, former Folsom inmate, Merle Haggard.

The personal memoirs of writer Gene Beley of these concerts make up a significant part of the exhibition. Cash had been performing for inmates since 1957, after receiving a hoard of requests from prisoners who identified with his song “Folsom Prison Blues.”

The exhibition 1968: A Folsom Redemption, runs through May 21st, 2022.

The Kilgore College East Texas Oil Museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
