A drug dealer from Laredo, Texas, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute meth after he told the judge he is a father.
The judge asked him if he sold the same drugs to his family and if he’d stop selling them if one of his own children overdosed.
Daniel Rodriguez, 46, pleaded guilty April 2, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas Alamdar S. Hamdani said in a news release Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo sentenced Rodriguez to three decades in federal prison, which immediately will be followed by five years of supervised release. During the sentencing hearing, the judge noted Rodriguez sold poison to people and continued to do so despite having several opportunities to stop.
On Jan. 3, authorities executed a search warrant at Rodriguez’s home. Law enforcement officers saw Rodriguez flee from inside his home and attempt to discard a baggie that later was found to have meth.
Rodriguez was detained, and authorities searched his home, where they found more meth.
He later admitted the drugs belonged to him, the news release said.
Rodriguez will stay in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, the Border Patrol and the Laredo Police Department investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brian Bajew and Leslie Cortez prosecuted.
