VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Mental Health America of West Central Indiana has received a grant that will help current or former citizens who’ve been in the criminal justice system.
The grant comes from the federal government and is categorized as home funds.
It will help residents who currently, or have been, in the criminal justice system with short-term rental assistance.
Myra Wilkey is the CEO of Mental Health America. She said the grant will not provide long-term money but will be a short-term solution for residents to get back on their feet.
“I think people that are in the criminal justice system, once they get in, it is very hard to get out”, Wilkey said. “It is increasingly hard, in today’s housing market, to get housed and on their feet. That’s what we are invested in, is getting them housed, getting them on their feet, so they can be productive citizens.”
Wilkey said the grant was appropriated by congress in 2023. She hopes it will stay in the budget for the near future.
