Tennis icon Martina Navratilova expressed outrage over a US lawmaker’s dismissive response to the safety of women in prisons. She criticized the lawmaker’s focus on transgender inmates’ rights instead of addressing the safety concerns of incarcerated women.
On January 11, 2024, politician Beth Daranciang shared a video on X, where she was seen confronting a lawmaker about a case in a Washington State women’s prison where a female inmate was allegedly assaulted by a transgender cellmate.
Daranciang also criticized the lawmaker for passing a bill that made it harder to determine the number of transgender inmates in women’s prisons.
The controversy centered around a transgender woman named Christopher Scott Williams, accused of sexually assaulting her former female cellmate Mozzy Clark. Clark filed a lawsuit alleging that Williams subjected her to prolonged harassment and abuse.
Instead of addressing the allegations directly, the lawmaker shifted the conversation to her efforts to support transgender inmates’ rights. This response left Navratilova appalled and frustrated. She took to social media to express her dismay, calling the lawmaker’s response “beyond stupid and irresponsible.”
The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion also criticized the audience for clapping during the lawmaker’s response, suggesting a lack of concern for the actual victims of assault in women’s prisons.
“Wtaf??? And the people who clapped??? So this woman is proud that photos of incarcerated women won’t get onto the internet but she has no comment on these same women being assaulted or raped by male bodies in women’s prisons??? Beyond stupid and irresponsible,” Navratilova wrote.

The controversy was highlighted on social media by Cheryl Saltzman, a concerned mother, who claimed that the university permitted a transgender person to reside in the all-women’s dorm. After voicing her objections, Saltzman claimed that her daughter was given alternative housing instead of addressing the issue.
Navratilova, a staunch advocate for women’s rights, shared her reaction on X, writing:
“And the insanity gets worse… who in their right mind thinks this is ok???”
