Louisiana Home to 2 of the Worst Prisons In America

While many know Louisiana for its festivals and friendly people, these prisons tell a darker story about the state’s criminal justice system. Prison conditions across the U.S. have been under scrutiny for years, and unfortunately, two of Louisiana’s prisons have made a name for themselves for all the wrong reasons.

MoneyINC recently ranked the Top 20 Worst Prisons in America, and Louisiana stands out with two of its prisons making the list.  These two prisons have been criticized for years and featured in multiple investigations. Both facilities have long histories that have gained national attention for harsh conditions, violence, and misconduct.

Louisiana is known for its culture, food, and music, but it’s also home to two of the worst prisons in America. According to MoneyINC’s list of the Top 20 Worst Prisons in America, both the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola and Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans rank among the worst.

Now, the first Louisiana prison to make the list is the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, also known as “Angola Prison” or the “Alcatraz of the South.” This is the largest maximum-security prison in the United States, housing over 5,000 inmates. It covers a staggering 18,000 acres of land, and more than 2,000 staff members work to maintain order.

The prison’s dark reputation comes from the violent nature of many of its inmates, as well as the extreme isolation and harsh conditions prisoners face. Many have pointed out how difficult life is for those behind bars here, which is why it ranks number 14 on the list.

However, the prison that ranks even higher on the list is Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans. This facility made national news during Hurricane Katrina, when inmates were left stranded in terrible conditions with no food, clean water, or electricity. Many were forced to stand in sewage-filled water.

Since then, the prison has faced numerous allegations of violence and drug smuggling, with an ongoing FBI investigation into the conditions. It ranks number 5 on the list due to the multiple serious issues over the years, making it one of the worst prisons in the country.
