Disappointed in sentencing

I was surprised and very disappointed to read an article in The Guardian (P.E.I. man gets conditional sentences and probation for stabbing, other assaults, Oct. 27) reporting on a recent court decision resulting in no incarceration for crimes of a stabbing and more than one assault.

This sentence seems like a slap on the wrist and I cannot see how it would be a deterrence in the commission of similar serious offences. Where is our justice system heading?

Vote-securing exercise at play

Albertans are happy to hear that people in Prince Edward Island will receive a reprieve from the carbon tax for their home heating oil. That is great news, but what about the farmers who use propane or the fishers whose boats utilize diesel in their daily operations?

To truly help residents and businesses in the province who are struggling like citizens everywhere in this country, the rebate needed to encompass more fuel sources. The fact that the extra rebate only applies to home heating oil and will only apply until after the next election illustrates that it is simply a vote-securing exercise.

Stephen Guilbeault, Climate Change minister, stated last month that it would not be fair to the rest of Canada if the Liberal government gave exceptions that would only benefit Atlantic Canada. Trudeau’s Housing Minister Sean Fraser also stated just a few days ago in the House of Commons that any rebates would “make pollution free again.”

These sorts of comments truly show that securing Liberal votes is their focus right now, but after the election their focus will go back to punishing Canadians who have to heat their homes in our cold climate, despite the fact that Canada only produces 1.6 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Fortunately, Canadians are smart enough to see through the Liberals’ facade and will let them know that — via the ballot box the day of the next federal election, which cannot come soon enough.

Peace is only solution to Gaza

My parents were born in 1921. Years ago I asked why they didn’t do more about what was happening in Germany in the 1930s. They said they didn’t know and that’s probably true growing up in rural P.E.I. Today we don’t have that excuse because the military seige of Gaza is all over the news.

Now we know what we would have done if we were alive in the 1930s because it’s what we are doing now.

The Island Peace Committee asks you to stand up and speak out. We have two requests: Join a peace vigil on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Cenotaph in Charlottetown. Ask your MP to demand an immediate ceasefire in the region as MP Sean Casey has already done.

The Island Peace Committee sees no military solution to this current crisis.

An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind.

Court case for climate deniers

The International Criminal Court has arrest warrants out for war criminals. We need an international climate court to issue warrants for politicians who say climate change is a hoax and for petroleum engineers who complain about us “climate Barbies” being bad for business.

Morell, P.E.I.
