The heartbroken family of Jason Corbett have said his killers – Molly and Thomas Martens – “are and will remain killers” after they are set to be released 21 days earlier than expected.
Molly, 40, and Thomas, 73, were moved from Davidson County Jail in the US to high security prisons last December after they were re-sentenced for the Limerick businessman’s manslaughter.
The move happened just days after we exclusively exposed the prison date blunders that left Jason’s heartbroken family outraged and US prison officials red-faced – and saw Thomas and Molly almost walking free.
The Department of Adult Correction in North Carolina confirmed the imminent release dates for the evil pair of Tuesday, December 5 last and Wednesday, December 6 last displayed on their publicly available prison records were correct.
But later, red-faced prison officials admitted to a mix up due to “human error” and reversed their embarrassing error on their release dates which then prevented the pair from walking free.
Prison officials were forced to then admit the killers would be caged until June 27.
Now, we can reveal that shockingly, both Molly and Thomas’ release dates have been amended to free them from prison on June 6 – which is 21 days earlier than their projected release dates – adding further insult to the Limerick dad-of-two’s family and memory.
“Our Family is disappointed with the news. The sentence was and never will be sufficient. They are and will remain killers,” Jason’s sister Tracey told The Irish Mirror last night.
In a statement to us, a spokesperson for the Office of Communication of North Carolina Department of Adult Correction confirmed the killers’ early release.
“Today (Tuesday) we received amended judgment and commitment documents from the court in Davidson County for both Thomas Martens and Molly Martens Corbett. Both were amended to include 21 additional days of time served, to correctly reflect the actual number of days served during their first incarcerations.
“The additional 21 days of time served moves the release dates for both to June 6, 2024. The updated release dates should be reflected on the NCDAC website on Wednesday, after the nightly update.”
Thomas was moved from Davidson County Jail to Piedmont Correctional Institute, a high security prison, on December 5 following the release date blunder revealed by The Irish Mirror, while evil Molly was moved to North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women.
We also revealed that days later, on December 13 last, Thomas was moved to a cushy minimum security prison called Caldwell Correctional Centre in Lenoir, North Carolina – where he is availing of a single bed cell and academic classes.
Evil Molly remains in North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women in Raleigh.
Both evil killers accepted a voluntary manslaughter plea deal over the killing of Limerick dad-of-two Jason Corbett in 2015 for beating him to death with a metal baseball bat and a concrete paving slab in his home in North Carolina. They claimed self defence.
They were initially convicted of second degree murder and jailed for 20 to 25 years.
But in 2020, their murder convictions were overturned and a retrial was ordered due to an appeal court deciding that some evidence had been excluded from the original trial.
Molly and Thomas later accepted a plea deal of voluntary manslaughter and they received a prison sentence of between 51 and 74 months, taking into account the 44 months already served.
