Since Sunday, the vicinity of al-Quds Hospital has been subjected to daily bombardment, says Nebal Farsakh, a spokesperson for the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS).
“We’re talking about shelling about 15 metres (49 feet) from the hospital building. Most of the buildings around the hospital have been almost completely destroyed. The bombings are getting closer and closer to the hospital and we fear a direct hit to the hospital,” she told Al Jazeera.
Most of the roads that lead to the hospital in Gaza City have been closed, forcing medics in ambulances to take a single, rugged and unpaved road in order to reach the injured.
“We have about 500 patients inside the hospital. We have 15 patients in the ICU. They are wounded and on respirators. We have newborns in incubators. We have 14,000 displaced people, the majority of whom are women and children,” Farsakh said.
As Israeli forces continue to bisect the Strip, the northern areas have suffered from a scarcity of medical supplies and medicines, she added, “and now we are running out of fuel”.
“We have had to stop four ambulances from working,” Farsakh said. “A few days ago, it was an impossible task to provide bread for patients, doctors, and paramedics. Also, obtaining water has become very difficult.”
Due to the lack of fuel, the PRCS has started taking the following measures:
- Shutting down generators after 9am
- Closing off the surgery department
- Relying on oxygen tanks and shutting down oxygen generators
