International event “Solitary confinement in prisons and its alternatives: an international perspective”

On September 24-25, Strasbourg hosted a two-day event dedicated to solitary confinement in penitentiary institutions. Representatives of 35 Council of Europe member states discussed how to reduce the harm caused by the isolation of prisoners and introduce more humane alternatives. During the event, representatives of the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR ) shared their standards and recent findings on the use of solitary confinement.
