The ICC said Trump’s order would “harm its independent and impartial judicial work,” and urged its 125 member states “to stand united” for justice and human rights. “The court pledges to continue providing justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities across the world, in all situations before it,” the ICC added.
The same day, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on social media that the court must be able to pursue its fight against global impunity without hindrance. “Europe will always stand for justice and the respect of international law,” she added.
The European Council also criticized the US’s decision, saying that “sanctioning the ICC threatens the Court’s independence and undermines the international criminal justice system as a whole.”
Previously, US President Donald Trump authorized economic and travel sanctions targeting the ICC. “The ICC has no jurisdiction over the United States or Israel, as neither country is party to the Rome Statute or a member of the ICC,” the White House said in a statement.
