Inside jails Hunter Biden could serve 25 years in after being found guilty

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has been found guilty on all three felony charges related to a gun purchase. This verdict could potentially lead to a 25-year prison sentence for the president’s son.

Biden, aged 54, maintained a stoic demeanour as the verdict was announced after a mere three hours of jury deliberation spread over two days in Wilmington, Delaware. He shared a hug with his legal team and a kiss with his wife, Melissa, before exiting the courtroom alongside her.

The prosecution made the case that the president’s son had lied on a compulsory form for gun purchase by denying any illegal drug use or addiction in 2018. Following the verdict, President Biden issued a statement expressing his acceptance of the outcome and his continued respect for the judicial process as Hunter contemplates an appeal.

Hunter now faces a potential 25-year prison sentence, to be determined by US District Judge Maryellen Noreika. However, as a first-time offender, it is unlikely he will receive the maximum sentence, and there is no certainty that he will be sent to prison at all, reports the Mirror.

The judge has yet to set a date for sentencing. But where might the president’s son end up?

The Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Deleware is named after a 33-year Department veteran who died in 2001 after a battle with cancer. Originally called the Multi-Purpose Criminal Justice Facility, it was renamed in honour of Young in February 2004. Young was the first warden of the prison when it opened in 1982.

According to its website, the original facility, now called the West Wing, was designed to hold 360 detainees, individuals who are awaiting trial/sentencing or unable to make bail. In 1992, a new section, the East Wing, opened.

This construction project added 480 beds for sentenced offenders. Additional construction projects have increased the capacity to 1,180. The facility now averages 1,500 offenders. Given its location in Wilmington, Delaware, this could be the top contender if Biden were to face jail time as the other two prisons are located further out of the major city.
