Inmate art highlights three exhibits at Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art | Arts & Entertainment – KVNU – News for Northern Utah and Southern Idaho

LOGAN – Three art exhibits are now on display at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art on the campus of Utah State University.

The exhibitions are entitled Artepaño: Chicano Prisoner Kerchief Art; Los Angeles Hard Edge; and June Harwood Paintings.

The Artepaño exhibit opened on Saturday, Aug. 24 and will be on display until Feb. 1, 2025.

It features more than 70 artworks by Latinx artists working in the context of the American penal system.

A paño is a standard 15-inch square handkerchief transformed into a work of art by prisoners who alternatively self-identify as Chicano, Mexican-American or Latino.

To celebrate the Artepaño exhibit, the public is invited to the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum’s free presentation of a screening of the 1996 documentary film Paño Arte: Images from the Inside at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The film will be followed by a conversation with documentarian Álvaro Ibarra, the exhibit’s curator and an assistant professor of Art History at USU. He will be joined by Ben Olguin, a professor of English at University of California Santa Barbara, and Reno LaPlat-Torti, an artist, art collector and activist.

A reception with music and refreshments will follow that discussion.

The Los Angeles Hard Edge exhibit, which opened in July and will be on display until December, is a collection of paintings that emphasize flat shapes, colors and forms differentiated from each other by well-defined “hard” edges.

The June Harwood Paintings are an example of a refinement of the “Los Angles Hard Edge” style.

The Harwood exhibit also opened on Aug. 24 and will be on display until December.

Illustrating a style of abstraction and compositional rigor, Harwood’s paintings are characterized by flat planes of colors, uniform applications of paint and bold colors.

Additional information about these and other exhibits at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art can be found by going online to www.usu.edu/artmuseum

The museum is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art is located at 650 North, 1100 East on the campus of USU.
