Courts in Illinois will become the first in the US on Monday to implement a criminal justice system requiring them to either hold without bail those accused of a crime or release the person to await trial, as part of the state’s elimination of cash bail.
The change remains controversial, but for the courts the concerns are administrative. At least temporarily, the change is likely to cause an uptick in courthouse work and will require that additional resources are available to the courts.
