Former President Donald Trump was overheard on a hot mic in the Oval Office telling El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele that ‘the homegrowns are next.’

A startling moment from the Oval Office is making waves after former President Donald Trump was caught on a hot mic telling El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, “The homegrowns are next.” The comment was captured in a rough video posted by journalist Aaron Rupar on social media.

Hot mic moment between Trump and Bukele goes viral

The video was posted by Atlantic’s Jonathan Lemire, who provided context to the viral video. He wrote, “Before pool entered, this exchange was captured on the El Salvador government’s live stream. Trump endorses sending ‘homegrown’ U.S. prisoners to El Salvador—meaning American citizens to notorious foreign prisons,” as reported by The Mediate.

Trump’s shocking remarks in the viral video sparked a frenzy on social media platforms. A user wrote on X, “Aren’t we supposed to impeach a president that so blatantly disregards our Constitution?.” A second user wrote, “When a head of state starts referring to his own citizens as “home growns” needing foreign prisons, the alarms should be deafening. We’ve seen where this path leads.”

Another user questioned, “If there is a way to legally do it. Which if we can have private prisons, kinda leads to the question why not?”

Trump on funding prisons

The idea of deporting American criminals to foreign countries surfaced during a press availability, when Trump was asked whether the United States plans to fund prisons in El Salvador. He was asked, “Do you want to pay for those facilities to be open if you want them to be built?”
He responded, “I’d do something. We’d help them out. They’re great facilities, very strong facilities, and they don’t play games. ” He continued, ”I’d like to go a step further. I mean, I said it to (Attorney General) Pam [Bondi] I don’t know what the laws are —we always have to obey the laws— but we also have homegrown criminals that push people into subways that hit elderly ladies on the back of the head with a baseball bat when they’re not looking, that are absolute monsters.”

The President added, “I’d like to include them in the group of people to get them out of the country, but you’ll have to be looking at the laws on that.” However, experts stated that there are no legal ways to send US citizens to foreign prisons.
