South Africa is grappling with a growing drug trade, which is fuelling organised crime and drug addiction, according to an international crime index and report.

The report described South Africa as “one of the largest heroin consumer markets on the continent” and has become “a key player in the global cocaine trade”.

Estimated levels of methamphetamine – commonly referred to as tik – use in some areas of the country are among the highest reported in the world, the report said.
