General Service Unit (GSU) men’s and KCB women’s volleyball teams triumphed in the second round of the Eldoret City Open Volleyball tournament held at the Eldoret National Polytechnic grounds at the weekend.
GSU, renowned multiple champions, secured the men’s title by overpowering reigning Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) champions Kenya Prisons in a formidable showcase. The straight sets of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-20 marked their triumph, a victory fueled by their earlier quarterfinal win against defending champions Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Meanwhile, KCB Volleyball team emerged victorious, securing back-to-back wins by defeating their arch-rivals Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) in a hard-fought four-set final. The nail-biting encounter culminated in a 3-1 victory for KCB, a feat that echoed their earlier triumph over KPC in the pool match.
Despite GSU’s victory, head coach Gideon Tarus expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, emphasizing the need for improvement and strategic reconstruction for future events.
On the other hand, KCB’s head coach, also the national coach, Japheth Munala, commended the team’s resilience and determination.
“I am thrilled by our victory in Eldoret. The girls displayed exceptional determination, rightfully earning this win. We celebrate this victory before re-engaging in training as we gear up for the upcoming Kenya Volleyball Federation League’s third leg scheduled for early next year,” he averred.
In the women’s category, Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) triumphed over Kenya Prisons, securing their spot in the finals with a commanding straight-sets victory.
Simultaneously, KCB exhibited their prowess by defeating Postbank 3-1 in a thrilling encounter to secure their place in the championship match.
Uasin County Governor Jonathan Bii’s commendable initiative sponsored 60 teams from various backgrounds, providing an opportunity for exposure and interaction with national and international players. Additionally, in the schools girls’ category, Kwanthanze emerged victorious against Soweto, showcasing their dominance in the finals after defeating Kosirai and Cheptil in earlier rounds.
