Every U.S. state individually incarcerates more people per capita than most nations, and the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of any democracy globally. The Prison Policy Initiative (PPI), a MacArthur grantee, contextualizes the United States criminal justice system among global peers, visualizing the scale of incarceration as both individual states and as a nation. Among founding NATO countries, the U.S. incarcerates people four times more than all other members. PPI notes that while some people are looking to roll back reforms aimed at creating a more fair and just system, there are opportunities for states to work toward a more fair and just system.
