Federal Prison Workers Demand Change After Manchin’s Letter to Bureau of Prisons

Employees at the federal prison in Hazleton, West Virginia, are requesting reforms in response to a letter written by U.S. Senator Joe Manchin to Colette Peters, the Director of the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). The letter highlights the need for increased pay and improved hiring procedures. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 420 President, Justin Tarovisky, explained that these demands for change have been ongoing nationwide for several months.

One of the key requests made in Senator Manchin’s letter is for a 25% retention incentive for all staff. Additionally, Tarovisky is calling for an end to a practice called “augmentation,” which involves employing untrained workers in correctional officer roles due to low staffing levels. Tarovisky emphasizes that the retention incentive should be provided to all prison workers, regardless of their specific assignments.
