Federal inmate dies after being found unresponsive in Talladega prison

An inmate serving a 140-month sentence in a federal prison in Talladega died after being found unresponsive in the facility Sunday, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons announced Monday.

Kemond Fortson, 38, was in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution Talladega since March 30, 2021 after being convicted of drug- and gun-related charges.

He was found unresponsive at the prison around 8:05 p.m. Sunday.

Fortson was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The BOP did not release further details on the incident but said no staff or other inmates were injured “and at no time was the public in danger.”

Fortson was sentenced in the Middle District of Alabama to 140 months in federal prison on charges of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.

FCI Talladega is a medium-level security prison and houses 909 male inmates.
