Federal Bureau of Prisons closing FPC Pensacola, but what happens to TV star Todd Chrisley?

Federal Prison Camp Pensacola will permanently close as part of a nationwide fix for “several significant challenges” with the Bureau of Prisons.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) announced they would permanently close multiple federal prisons around the country, including FPC Pensacola, due to “critical staffing shortage, crumbling infrastructure and limited budgetary resources,” the Associate Press first reported.

In a release sent to the News Journal, FBOP says FPC Pensacola, which is a minimum security male prison located on Saufley Field, will be deactivated as a prison to “maximize resources and mitigate safety concerns.”

“This will also help alleviate staffing shortages across the FBOP,” the release said. “The structures that make up FPC Pensacola are owned by the U.S. Navy, which is in the process of moving all its assets to Naval Air Station Pensacola.”

Once all the inmates and current employees are moved, the Navy will demolish all vacated buildings, which are in “significant disrepair.”

Although FPC Pensacola will be deactivated, the FBOP says all 105 employees at the facility will be transferred to other facilities around the country.

What happens to Todd Chrisley after FPC Pensacola closure?

Possibly the most well known prisoner at FPC Pensacola is former reality television star Todd Chrisley who, along with his wife Julie, traded in mansions for prison cells after they were found guilty of tax evasion and defrauding community banks out of $30 million in June 2022.

Following their sentencing, Todd Chrisley was sent to FPC Pensacola where his children, Savanna and Chase, took to television news networks to allege their parents were suffering inhumane treatment due to lack of air conditioning, snakes, black mold and asbestos.

In 2009, FPC Pensacola was deemed the second cushiest U.S. prison by Forbes.

In response to the News Journal asking about Chrisley’s new prison home, the FBOP said, “For privacy, safety and security reasons we do not discuss any incarcerated individuals’ conditions of confinement, reasons for transfer or specific release place.”

However, FBOP did say they would make “every effort” to place inmates of impacted facilities within 500 miles of their current facility.

The closest facility to FPC Pensacola is Federal Correctional Institute Marianna, Florida.

Who are Todd and Julie Chrisley?

Todd and Julie starred in the reality TV show “Chrisley Knows Best,” where the couple portrayed themselves as multimillionaire real estate tycoons and entrepreneurs with a picture-perfect family. The show aired on the USA Network and recently released its 10th season.

The Chrisleys spent millions on designer brand clothes, luxury cars and real estate, including two mansions in Nashville, Tennessee, reportedly worth about $9 million.

The show was so successful, is spawned two spinoffs; the talk show “According to Chrisley” where Todd interviewed celebrities, and “Growing Up Chrisley,” which followed Chase and Savannah.

Why are the Chrisleys in prison?

In 2019, Todd and Julie Chrisley were indicted on tax evasion charges in Georgia. The 12-count indictment accused Todd and Julie of bank fraud and wire fraud conspiracy, among other offenses. Accountant Peter Tarantino was also charged for conspiring and aiding the filing of a false tax return.

Before information about the indictment was made public, Todd Chrisley posted a note on Instagram denying the charges, saying “a dark cloud has hung over his family’s head for the past seven years.” He claimed an unnamed employee “was stealing from the family, created false documents, forged their signatures and bugged their home.”

He added on Instagram, “Not only do we know we’ve done nothing wrong, but we’ve got a ton of hard evidence and a bunch of corroborating witnesses that proves it.”

Nonetheless, an Atlanta jury convicted them following a nearly three-week jury trial.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Todd and Julie Chrisley conspired to defraud community banks in the Atlanta area to obtain more than $36 million in personal loans. The Chrisleys, with the help of their former business partner, submitted false bank statements, audit reports and personal financial statements to Georgia community banks to obtain the loans.

When do Todd and Julie Chrisley get out of prison?

According to FBOP records, Todd Chrisley is scheduled to be released June 11, 2032.

Julie Chrisley is scheduled to be released March 23, 2028.
