FBI, US DOJ looking into Robert Brooks death at Marcy prison, CO’s suspended without pay as some lawmakers call for closure of Mohawk Valley facilities

The beating death of Robert L. Brooks is garnering more and more outrage and calls for reform, as law enforcement agencies including the FBI look into the death and reportedly consider charges for the corrections officers, sergeants and nurse involved.

As detailed in graphic bodycam video released to the public on Friday, Brooks was beaten by a group of corrections officers just moments after he arrived at Marcy Correctional Facility, a state prison in Oneida County. In a medical exam room at the minimum-security prison, video shows five officers appear to beat Brooks with fists, his shoes, their own legs and feet, grappling him by the neck and repeatedly seeming to knock him unconscious. Brooks was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died early in the morning of Dec. 10. A medical examiners report found that he died as a result of constriction of his neck, asphyxiating him.
