The wife of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman will reportedly be freed Wednesday in Los Angeles, following her 2021 conviction on drug trafficking charges.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, a 34-year-old former beauty queen married Guzman back in 2007 when she was just 18. She shares two children with the drug kingpin, who is 32 years her senior.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons shared the news of her release Tuesday, without giving further reason for the decision, reports Reuters.
Coronel was arrested in 2021 and sentenced to three years in prison, though her sentence was later reduced to 31 months. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and distribute illegal drugs, as well as other charges related to her dealings with the Sinaloa drug cartel.
She also played a pivotal role in Guzman’s 2015 escape from a Mexican prison, police said, by allegedly bringing him a GPS device disguised as food during visiting hours. Cartel soldiers then used the tracker to locate Guzman and dig a tunnel to him under the prison.
According to her sentencing judge, Coronel readily accepted responsibility for her actions and agreed to hand over almost $1.5 million which she had accrued from her criminal activity, giving it to the U.S. government.
She will now reportedly face two years of supervised release. The San Francisco native was transferred to the L.A. halfway house back in June, a change of scenery from the federal women’s prison near Fort Worth, Texas, where she began her sentence.
Her husband continues to serve a life sentence in the U.S. following his recapture. Guzman was extradited to the states in 2017 after his second escape from a maximum-security prison in Mexico.
