Diddy-related graffiti appears near ‘hell on earth’ jail as rapper awaits trial

As Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs remains locked up in one of America’s worst prisons, which has been described as “hell on earth”, graffiti with a possible connection to the rapper litters the walls of the prison’s neighborhood.

Metropolitan Detention Center is situated in Industry City, Brooklyn by the Hudson River where debris lines the streets and graffiti plasters the walls. It’s tucked under a bridge overpass where cars travel by highway. While the prison itself remains free of spray paint, the underpass features a pointed, ironically ominous word: “Love.”

That pink painting is not the only which popped up by the crumbling prison. Across the street, more and repetitive iterations of the word are present and while it’s unknown if the graffiti is a tribute to the music mogul, fans of Diddy will recognize the term as one that he throws around often and, now, it’s haunting the prison where he awaits trial in connection to an ongoing sex trafficking case. Diddy has pleaded not guilty in court to all of the charges brought against him and vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Diddy changed his legal name to Sean Love Combs in Nov. 2017, a move he publicized online by tattooing the word across his body. He continuously incorporated “love” into his branding, changing his name on Instagram to the word. The rapper took matters to the next level when he named his youngest daughter Love Combs.

It wasn’t only in his personal life that he highlighted love. Diddy also dropped “The Love Album: Off the Grid” in Sept. 2023, just two months before Cassie Ventura filed a civil lawsuit against him where she accused him of, among other things, sexual assault. The case was settled out of court within a day.

Diddy addressed the settlement with, yet again, referencing the world. He said in a statement: “We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best. Love.”

Cassie’s case was the first of many which accused him of sexual misconduct with a slew of allegations rolling in. As more piled up in New York courts, Homeland Security executed a raid on his Los Angeles and Miami homes in connection to a sex trafficking investigation. Based on their findings, Diddy was indicted and arrested in New York before being sent to MDC.

In another reference to the rapper’s life, some of the graffiti also featured a crown, potentially referencing royalty and kingdom. Diddy’s son, Christian Combs, is nicknamed “King” Combs and appeared in support of him during his arraignment hearing.

“Brooklyn happens to be the worst possible facility in all the detention centers in the United States,” Sam Mangel, a federal prison consultant told The Mirror. According to Sam, the conditions inside are riddled with safety issues and understaffing — issues only underscored by the cracked pavement and chipped stone outside that makes up the unnerving walls.
