Dame Sue Carr says- “It is a great privilege to assume this role. I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor, Lord Burnett, who has demonstrated extraordinary resilience and leadership during a time of great change, including keeping the courts running during the pandemic. He has personally given so much to the law and to the judiciary. I do not underestimate the challenges that lie ahead, and I look forward to approaching the role with energy, enthusiasm, and positivity. Lady Carr, at 58 years of age, will be responsible for overseeing the deployment and welfare of judges, managing the allocation of work in the courts, and taking the lead in negotiations with the government regarding funding for the judiciary.
She became a barrister in 1987 and earned the prestigious title of Queen’s Counsel in 2003, has held a succession of influential roles throughout her career. Notably, she served as the chair of the Bar Standards Board and acted as the complaints commissioner for the International Criminal Court in the Hague.
Her journey in the judiciary began in 2009 when she became a criminal judge, and in 2013, she ascended to the position of a High Court judge. Further, in 2020, she was appointed a Lady Justice of Appeal, marking a significant milestone in her judicial career.
This historic appointment coincides with a dedicated effort to enhance diversity within the judiciary. A mother of three, Lady Carr is an alumna of the University of Cambridge, reflecting her academic prowess.
