Crime Coverage Summits in 2024

TV news coverage of crime influences people’s perception not only of their personal safety but of the criminal justice system at large. Its visual impact often draws criticism for amplifying racial stereotypes and violence with a decades-old “if it bleeds it leads” approach.

As journalists work to restore trust between the news media and the communities they serve, the National Press Foundation and the Radio Television Digital News Association are partnering to help broadcast journalists delve into issues of policing, race, juvenile justice, gun violence and mental health. Speakers will include experts in each of these areas, including those who’ve worked at the highest levels, such as former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

One training will be held Jan. 8-10 in Philadelphia; another Jan. 17-19 in New Orleans. Journalists are encouraged to register/apply to one.

In addition to learning from experts, the journalists will have ample opportunity to engage with each other to deliberate solutions-oriented approaches to crime coverage and the challenges it entails.

NPF’s motto is “making good journalists better,” and this is the fifth-straight year we’ve brought that focus to criminal justice coverage – and our second year partnering with RTDNA to reach high-impact broadcast leaders. The 2023 Crime Coverage Summit in San Diego helped journalists across the country bring positive changes to their newsrooms and communities. We are excited to build on that success by expanding access to more journalists this year.

The 2024 Crime Coverage Summits are sponsored by Arnold Ventures. NPF and RTDNA are solely responsible for the content.
