Contreras breaks it down: How De Lima case weakens ICC

Political analyst Antonio Contreras believes that the grant of Leila De Lima’s bail has weakened the justification of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to intervene in the Philippine justice system.

According to Contreras, the release of Leila De Lima is a “double-edged sword” as while it shows that the Philippine justice system is working, it has also put the necessity of the ICC’s involvement into question.

In a recent interview on “PolitiSkoop” online program,” Contreras stated that due to the grant of De Lima’s bail, the Philippines has shown that it is perfectly capable of fixing the problems within its justice system.

He believes that people are misreading the situation by thinking that the release of De Lima is naturally followed by the entry of the ICC as the development of De Lima’s case has reinforced our local courts.

This is in line with the opinion of Sen. Imee Marcos, stating that the bail of Sen. De Lima is a testament to her belief that “the ICC has no jurisdiction over any Filipino—lalo na kay President Rodrigo Duterte.”

Contreras suggested that now is likely the best time to file a complaint against Duterte in the local courts as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is seemingly not intervening in the matter.
