Conservative Action Project Leaders assail ‘weaponization’ of criminal justice, asking for responsive steps from Republican leaders in Congress

Editor’s Note: Below is the text and announced signatories of an Open Letter sent to Republican leaders in Congress concerning what they consider the ‘weaponization’ of the American criminal justice system through the prosecution of former President Donald Trump. The names and affiliations of those who signed the letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are for purposes of identification. The letter, which asks the Republicans in Congress to take certain specific steps — follows:

The Honorable Mike Johnson

Speaker

United States House of Representatives

H-232, The Capitol

The Honorable Mitch McConnell

Republican Leader

United States Senate

S-230, The Capitol

June 11, 2024

Washington, D.C.

Dear House and Senate Republican Leadership:

For the first time in our history, the American justice system was successfully weaponized to convict the Republican presidential nominee on multiple phony felonies with the help of a Constitution-bending partisan judge, a politically motivated District Attorney, and the Biden White House.

The verdict is a travesty of justice. Look at the facts: The District Attorney was funded by George Soros and campaigned on “getting” Donald Trump. He was assisted by one of the Biden administration’s top appointees at the Department of Justice who aided him in inventing a crime out of thin air, elevating what is normally a misdemeanor with a long-expired statute of limitations to 34 felonies. The chief witness was a convicted perjurer who admitted to hating and stealing from his former client. The judge, Juan Merchan, tainted the jury from day one by ignoring nearly every motion and objection by the defense and refusing to allow crucial testimony. He also refused to recuse himself despite donating to anti-Trump causes and while his daughter raised money off the trial to benefit Democrat politicians.

The New York political partisan judicial lynching of Donald Trump clearly demonstrates to the American people what a leftist oligarchy means – and can mean – to any American who falls into political disfavor and is targeted by the left.

Even if President Trump prevails on appeal, the Democrats have caused the damage they hoped for: together with their willing handmaidens in the media, they are already painting their chief political opponent as a “convicted felon,” hoping that the outcome of this political show trial will impact the 2024 election.

Such partisan weaponization is blatantly un-American and demands a courageous and coordinated response from congressional Republicans. Strongly worded tweets and statements are not enough to fight back against what is an attack on the core foundations of American democracy.

To that end, we urge you to engage in meaningful action by joining a letter currently being circulated by Senators Mike Lee, J.D. Vance, Rick Scott, Tommy Tuberville, Marsha Blackburn, Roger Marshall, Ron Johnson, and a growing number of their Senate colleagues. The letter makes clear these senators intend to use their leverage within the Senate to respond to the unprecedented political weaponization engaged in by this White House.

The letter vows not to:

(A)llow any increase to non-security related funding for this administration, or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare; 2) vote to confirm this administration’s political or judicial appointees; and 3) allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people. (emphasis added)

We strongly urge House and Senate Republican leadership to unite in support of the rule of law and to fight back against this abuse of our system of government. Americans are outraged at this weaponization of our judicial system, and you should be as well. This bell will not be un-rung unless our congressional representatives fight it with all of their leverage.

Sincerely,

The Honorable J. Kenneth Blackwell, Chairman, Conservative Action Project, Chairman, CNP Action, Inc.
