Supreme Court Justice Dias Toffoli on Monday ordered the Federal Prosecution Office to forward copies of ongoing investigations into whether Transparency International received public funds under a 2017 leniency agreement signed by J&F, the parent company of food processor JBS, the world’s largest meatpacker.
The leniency agreement was signed under the umbrella of Operation Car Wash, a controversial anti-corruption task force that exposed corrupt dealings between every major political party in Brazil and major corporations, which systematically paid bribes in exchange for winning contracts with public companies.
Justice Toffoli has been a Car Wash opponent, taking multiple digs at the task force’s legacy. In recent months, the justice has nullified evidence produced by Car Wash investigators, saying they “disrespected due process, subverted evidence, and acted with bias and outside their mandates.”
His latest move was motivated by a petition to investigate Transparency International presented by Congressman Rui Falcão, who currently serves as the chair of the key House Constitution and Justice Committee and previously served as the national chair of the Workers’ Party.
In his petition, Mr. Falcão claims that Transparency International “acted as a true accomplice of the abuses perpetrated by Operation Car Wash.”
This accusation is an old one. Back in late 2019, prosecutors said in a statement that Transparency International “never managed” and would never manage any funds under the leniency agreement.
